Welcome to the Dallas Insurance Law American Inn of Court

The first American Inn of Court to focus on Insurance Law.

Welcome to the Dallas Insurance Law American Inn of Court, the first American Inn of Court to focus on Insurance Law.

An American Inn of Court is loosely based on the traditional English Inns of Court and is an amalgam of judges, law professors, and both experienced and less experienced lawyers who come together to “break bread” and discuss and debate current legal issues. The goal of the Dallas Insurance Law American Inn of Court is to facilitate discussion among judges, law professors, policyholder attorneys, and carrier attorneys regarding recent developments in Insurance Law for the benefit of the entire legal community.

Our Inn is affiliated with the American Inns of Court, a national organization based in Washington, D.C. For more information about the national organization, please visit the American Inns of Court website.

If you have questions about the Dallas Insurance Law American Inn of Court or how to nominate a new member, please direct them to the Inn’s Secretary/Treasurer Matthew Kolodoski

Serjeant of the Inn Award

Congratulations to Marc Gravely on his receipt of the 2025 Serjeant of the Inn Award.

The Serjeant of the Inn Award is based on the English Serjeants-at-Law, who were an elite group of attorneys. The award is bestowed annually by each of the Dallas-area American Inns of Court to one of their Master of the Bench members who has significantly contributed to the legal profession and community during their career.

Marc Gravely is one of the Co-Founders of the Dallas Insurance Law American Inn of Court and its first Counselor. For his hard work in founding the Inn and his leadership in the local and state-wide legal community, the Inn is proud to announce his receipt of the 2025 Serjeant of the Inn Award.

Lex Mercatoria Award

Congratulations to Dr. Hannah Farber of Columbia University on her receipt of the 2024 Lex Mercatoria Award for Insurance Law.

The Lex Mercatoria Award for Insurance Law was established by the Dallas Insurance Law American Inn of Court in 2024. It is named after the customary law of merchants that helped establish the modern understanding of Insurance Law. It is presented annually by the Dallas Insurance Law American Inn of Court to recognize the author of a recent book or article for their extraordinary contribution to the theory, practice, or field of Insurance Law.

Dr. Farber is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Columbia University. She specializes in the political economy of colonial North America, the early American republic, and the Atlantic World. Her first book, Underwriters of the United States explains how the transnational system of marine insurance, by governing the behavior of American merchants, influenced the establishment and early development of the American republic.
